Volleyball Pre-season: The Coach’s Role in Promoting Compliance

With volleyball and other fall sports quickly approaching, coaches must start to consider their health and safety compliance requirements, not only for in-season period but for pre-participation as well. Coaches have an obligation and responsibility to ensure that their programs are in compliance. Maintaining compliance ensures that each coach and volunteer within an organization has completed essential, up-to-date education, but most importantly, it safeguards the health and well-being of athletes. Compliance education builds trust and reduces risks and if parents can trust that coaches are maintaining compliant programs, they can rest assured that their athletes are in good hands.

Many coaches face problems when maintaining health and safety compliance because of the administrative burden associated with antiquated paperwork documentation, infrequent communication and inadequate monitoring of coaches' compliance education. Maintaining compliance can be time-consuming and burdensome for coaches and organizations, but the potential safety risk associated with non-compliance is massive. During pre-season, pre-participation compliance includes background checks, education, training, and waivers. In-season compliance includes Emergency Action Plans (EAP’s), injury and concussion reporting and communication.  The many ways organizations monitor compliance today are fragmented, time consuming and may not be accurate or current. To promote a culture of compliance, coaches can rely on web-based, risk management platforms such as InjureFree to streamline necessary communication, documentation and monitoring to ensure coach and volunteer compliance.
